TIPS for recruitment and succession planning

Make conferencing an integral part of the early career experience of every LIS student.

Enable access to conferences and other professional events for New Professionals (discounts, grants, awards).

Foster recruitment of new librarians through:

• informal contacts
• outreach, online and on-site (return on investment)
• institutionalized programs (leadership, mentoring etc.)

Support the creation of a group for and by New Professionals.

Provide enough time and space for them to organize themselves effectively and to try things out.

Include new librarians in important bodies of your association and in decision-making processes.

At the first-ever IFLA BSLA mini-congress in Berlin Germany February 23-24 2012, representatives of IFLA BSLA country projects from Botswana, Cameroon, Lebanon, Lithuania, Nepal, Peru and Ukraine shared their success stories, and solutions to challenges that cut across borders. Strategies to engage with politicians, stakeholders, and to sustain associations into the future were discussed by all association representatives and their trainers.

The Finnish network of new library professionals “Nuorkirjastolaiset” just published a pamphlet Epäpäivä!–Voimasanoja kirjastosta (“Due date–Powerwords from the library“; BTJ-Avain, ISBN 9789516928688).

A product of a collaborative writing process and edited by Veera Ristokartano and Antti Virrankoski, the polemic pamphlet raises several key problems in the libraryworld: library’s reaction to digital content, immaterial rights, generations of digital natives (who are amongs us and not “a challenge to tackle somewhere in the future”), human resource management and lifelong learning within the library profession, information politics and commitment to open access and egalitarianism are some of the issues discussed. The preface builds upon a scenario, what would happen if libraries vanished today. What would the nearby future look like? Would anybody really care?

The pamphlet was published at Finnish Library Conference 2011. On 8th of June Cycling for libraries, Der Deutsche Bibliotheksverband e.V. (dbv) and Kirjastokaista organized a video interview of editor Veera Ristikartano from Finnish Library Conference held Oulu to the 100. Deutscher Bibliothekartage held in Berlin. NPSIG at the German Library Conference in Berlin

Sebastian and I will attend the biggest gathering of librarians in Germany, this year in Berlin, from June 8th till June 10th. We will present a poster about the IFLA NPSIG (Session: “Highlights aus Ausbildung und Studium – Präsentation ausgewählter Projekte. 7. Newcomer-Treff (NCT) des BIB auf dem 100. Deutschen Bibliothekartag in Berlin 2011″ 08.06.2011  12:30-14:00) to promote our vibrant group to the attendees and hopefully attract more people from Germany. Additionally, Sebastian will host a session about New Professionals (10.06.2011  09:00-11:00) called: “Forum New Professionals: Identität, Innovation, Networking — New Professionals zwischen Studium, Referendariat und Berufseinstieg”

• “Wie finde ich in einem sehr breiten Berufsfeld am besten zu meinem eigenen Profil?”
• “Wie kann mir ein möglichst nahtloser Übergang von der Ausbildung ins Berufsleben gelingen?”
• “Was steht global auf der Agenda von und für New Professionals?”

Dies sind nur einige der Fragen, denen sich Studierende, Referendare und Berufseinsteiger im Bereich “Bibliothek und Information” gegenübersehen.

In diesem zunehmend dynamischen Berufsfeld wird die eigene Positionierung zwischen Wissenschaft, Informationsvermittlung, Management und IT-Fachwissen immer relevanter.

An dieser Stelle soll ein Raum zur Diskussion über Chancen und Probleme von Ausbildung und Berufseinstieg geschaffen werden. Dabei geht es darum, Ansätze für individuelle Handlungsmöglichkeiten und Strategien vor dem Hintergrund größerer Entwicklungen anzudenken. Wie etwa gehen wir, um nur zwei Beispiele zu nennen, mit zunehmend prekären Arbeitsverhältnissen selbst im Öffentlichen Dienst um, oder mit der Öffnung der internationalen Arbeitsmärkte?

Die Session ist in allererster Linie als Austausch- und Diskussionsforum konzipiert. Nach den beiden ca. fünfminütigen Impulsreferaten zum Thema folgt ein Brainstorming, in dem wir Fragen und Ideen sammeln und strukturieren, die im weiteren Verlauf als Diskussionsgrundlage dienen.

Was sind eigentlich New Professionals ?

Nun, das sind Studierende und BerufseinsteigerInnen in den Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaften. Wir von der New Professionals Special Interest Group der IFLA möchten gemeinsam mit Euch das Beste aus Studium und Berufseinstieg machen. Dazu vernetzen wir uns mit New Professionals auf der ganzen Welt , tauschen uns online über Ideen und Projekte aus und treffen uns auf Konferenzen und Workshops im In- und Ausland , z.B. auf den BOBCATSSSS-Symposien. Wir gestalten den Wandel!

Wandel und Innovation spielen eine immer größere Rolle in der Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft. New Professionals – Studierende und Berufsanfänger sind davon genauso betroffen wie erfahrene Kollegen. Aber gerade die New Professionals treiben den Wandel voran, vielfach sicher auch getrieben vom Wandel selbst.In unserem Poster wollen wir, die New Professionals Special Interest Group (NPSIG) der International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), die Sicht von New Professionals auf sich und ihren Beruf veranschaulichen.Basierend auf den Ergebnissen von Workshops, welche die NPSIG regelmäßig auf den BOBCATSSS-Konferenzen mit New Professionals durchführt, werden die Kernkompetenzen eines erfolgreichen New Professionals bildlich dargestellt.

Zusammen mit unseren Onlineaktivitäten ( http://npsig.wordpress.com ) bilden diese Workshops eine offene Diskussionsplattform für New Professionals aus aller Welt zum Austausch von Ideen und Visionen. Damit tragen wir als NPSIG dazu bei, den Wandel unserer Profession positiv mitzugestalten.

Wir laden alle Studierende und Berufsanfänger aber auch unsere erfahreneren KollegInnen ein mit uns gemeinsam auf dem 7. Newcomer-Treff des Jubiläumsbibliothekartags neue Visionen zu erträumen.
